Arrival
Students walking to school or being dropped off by a parent may enter the school building at 7:00 AM. Students may wait in the main lobby area or the cafeteria until 7:25 AM, at which time they will be released to homeroom. Parents dropping students off at school in the morning are asked to do so in parking lot B by the gym entrance to avoid interrupting the traffic flow of our buses as they drop students off in the bus loop.
Tardiness to School
All students are expected to arrive to school on time (by 7:35 AM). A student who is late to school must present our Attendance Clerk, Mrs. Ramsdell, with a written explanation from a parent or guardian for the tardiness. Tardiness is regularly monitored by our Assistant Principal, Mr. Weider. If a pattern of tardiness develops, he will meet with individual students and contact parents to address the concern. In some cases, Mr. Weider will meet with some students to develop a plan for getting to school on time. The efforts that parents make to ensure that students arrive to school on time is greatly appreciated!
Tardiness to Class
Students are provided 4 minutes of passing time between classes and they are expected to manage that time efficiently so as to arrive to classes on time. In most cases when a student is late to a class, the classroom teacher will work with that student to encourage "on-time" behavior. If a student continues to be late to class, it may become necessary for a teacher to refer the situation to the assistant principal for additional support. After the third time late to a class, students may receive consequences beginning with a general detention, and becoming more stringent if the tardiness problem continues.
Early Dismissal
Students who need to be dismissed early from school should bring in a signed note from their parent or guardian on the day in question. Notes are due to the Main Office before homeroom so that the dismissal can be noted on the morning attendance bulletin. Students will be given an Early Dismissal Form which must be signed by their teacher at the time of dismissal. These forms should be handed in at the Main Office. Parents are asked to meet students in the office and to sign them out. If the student returns to school, he or she must sign back in and get a pass to go to class.
Attendance Policies and Procedures
The HF-L Board of Education (BOE) recognizes that regular school attendance is a major component of academic success. Through implementation of this policy, the BOE expects to reduce the current level of unexcused absences, tardiness, and early departures (referred to in this policy as “ATEDs”), encourage full attendance by all students, maintain an adequate attendance record-keeping system for safety and school management reasons, identify patterns of student ATEDs and develop effective intervention, and verify compliance with compulsory education laws.
When a student is absent, tardy, or leaves early from class or school without an excuse, Mrs. Ramsdell, our Attendance Clerk, will notify the student's parent(s) by phone and/or mail of the specific ATED, remind them of the attendance policy, and review ATED intervention procedures with them.
Excused and Unexcused Absences
Excused ATEDs are defined as absences, tardiness, and early departures from class or school due to personal illness, illness or death in the family, religious observance, quarantine, required court appearances, attendance at health clinics, approved college visits, approved cooperative work programs, military obligations.
